I really hated the idea of buying a new one for many reasons, but repair was simply impractical. I originally bought mine in the late 1990's for about $1100.00 and used it for nearly 20 years until it broke down a few months ago. Fine print quality, excellent speed, and reasonably easy on ink (the individual color cartridges help a lot). And the machine is very quiet when it prints - especially in comparison to contemporary HP plastic monstrosities. For example, changing one of the six individual ink cartridges is dirt simple: lift the lid and they're right in front of you., Just pop open the latch on the cartridge, pull it out, pop in a new one, close the latch and lower the lid again and you're done. I know that it has a tendency to vibrate sometimes it tells me that a job didn't print when it did, but it keeps running.and doing a darn good job on regular copy as well as photos. I'm not crazy about the HP scanner program but it works and I often use the scanner capability to scan in those older 35mm prints which I want to organize and file for easy access. There are several models which do take HP-02 but most aren't as good as the HPC5180. I also wanted a printer which used the same ink cartridge. In the meanwhile, we purchased our 2nd HPC5180 for my husband. So the upgrade has been postponedįor reorgaqnization. Since we had to replace my husband's printer, I wanted to upgrade the next printer but we have a problem with the cats prefering to sleep on the printers. ![]() When printing for several large prints, I used to do a quick test run on regular paper so that I could make adjustments before using best quality ink amounts. Since there are no true new models around, you can pretty much ignore HPs fussiness over silghtly outdated ink cartridges but it will require repeated 'okays'.Įdit photos well so that you don't have to do to many print runs. Aside from one early problem which required an extensive chat with tech support, I've been able to deal even with a sticking paper feed with my reliable nail file and a folded sheet of paper.
